April 20 2013

  • Saw two Dung Beetles pushing a dung ball down the road. The male and female were cooperating with one beetle in front pulling and the other beetle in the back pushing. They would stop and one would try to dig a hole in the ground for the dung ball, give up and move on repeatedly. The caretakers finally moved the two beetles with the dung ball to an area of soft soil to ensure their success.
  • Saw two young Rock Squirrels exploring the yard.
  • Planted native pond edge plants- Bigfoot Clover, Fall Obedient plant, Dixie Iris
  • Added tree cuttings to berm at the pond to catch dirt
  • Saw and caged Pipevine grass mimic after seeing a Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly ovapositing on the leaves. The cage is marked and the road is re-reouted around the plant.

Pipevine plant is a grass mimic, only noticed because a Pipevine Swallowtail was seen laying eggs on it. The orange tape surrounds a small cage for indentification and protection.

  • Beefed up berms to preapre for expected rain.
  • 1.9 inches of rain!
  • Observed erosion control efforts and made adjustments where needed
  • Spread Black oil Sunflower seeds along the roads for Turkeys
  • Saw Hummingbirds in courtship dance, swooping high into the air in large arcs.
  • Saw very small baby Gecko eating moths on the screen door
  • Planted Buffalo Grass and Blue Grama seeds
  • Caged Antelope Horn milkweed to protect from foot taffic at barn
  • Installed home made bird house

  • Added old rotting boards to berm in cactus field for erosion control
  • Extended berm into the woods from the speed bump on the road
  • Removed invasive pond plant
  • Saw 30 Pine Siskins

January 27 2013

  • Continued clearing Juniper dead branches and mulching it to put onto roads for erosion control.
  • Fed Raccoons dogfood
  • Saw and rescued 2 small Geckos, both male and female who were hibernating in an old sheet.
  • Saw Canyon Wren looking for a nest site at the house, there are 3 Wren nest boxes.
