New plants introduced (from Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Spring plant sale and Natural Gardener):

  • 1 Wine Cup
  • 1 6-pack variety
  • 1 Butterfly Bush (red/purple)
  • 1 Datura
  • 2 coral honeysuckle
  • 1 Damianta
  • 1 Indigo Spires
  • 1 Crossvine
  • 2 Butterfly Bush (with monarch caterpillars!)

Caretaker's note: This Butterfly Bush was purchased at the Natural Gardener Nursery and came with 2 monarch caterpillars already feeding on the plant. This way we introduced both the host plant for the monarch butterfly and at the same time, added monarch caterpillars to the land.

Still in drought conditions.

  • Saw 6 Deer
  • Saw 2 dozen Turkeys in tall trees at river edge
  • Watered all plantings
  • Refilled 1000 gallon rain barrel for water drip behind water barn, using long hoses strung from well faucets.
  • Saw Wren, Cardinal
  • Saw Armadillo getting drink from pond near house

  • Removed KR bluestem around house and downhill
  • Continued to remove ragweed jungle along river trail exposing frostweed, lobelia and turks cap
  • Aerated yard
  • Continued waterings

  • Removed 3 strands of barbed wire on fence at deer crossing, total 4 spans, replaced with one strand of non-barbed wire.
  • Lopped baby junipers
  • Spread compost throughout yard area around new plantings
  • Removed Johnson grass
